Gaming Company Ubisoft Hacked by 16yo, Resets all Staff Passwords

Video games developer company Ubisoft has confirmed it was hacked sometime last week. This cyber-attack caused temporary disruption to its games and services. Some Ubisoft users reported an issue with performances, post which Ubisoft officially announced that they were cyber-attacked.

Cybersecurity attacks increase each year tremendously as technology grows. The last two years have shown how much threat has grown and evolved. Some of the major attacks include the HSE ransomware attack, attacks on the world’s largest meat producer, and a cyberattack on a major US gas pipeline. According to sources, Ubisoft is the third tech company hacked this march.

Ubisoft is a French video game company that has 170 million active users all over the world. It connects apps that allow users to access their stats and play games on PC, Apple, or Android devices. Ubisoft publishing and distribution company of interactive entertainment products worldwide. In 1989, Ubisoft officially first released a game called “zombie”. It creates and distributes games for consoles, PCs, smartphones, and tablets in physical and digital formats worldwide.

Ubisoft franchises include Rayman, Raving Rabbids, Prince of Persia, Assasin’s Creed, Far Cry, Just Dance, and Tom Clancy.

In a statement, Ubisoft says that “last week, Ubisoft experienced a cyber security incident that caused temporary disruption to some of our games, systems, and services”.

Ubisoft added, “our IT teams have been working with leading external experts to investigate the issue. As a precautionary measure, we initiated a company-wide password reset. Also, we can confirm that all our games and services are functioning normally and that at this time there is no evidence any player personal information was accessed or exposed as a by-product of this incident”.

lapsus$ took credits

South America-based lapsus$ hacking group took credit for hacking Ubisoft. It has not been officially announced but they shared the news on the verge, telegram group with a smirking face emoji. It leads to the investigation that it may have been the culprit.

According to sources lapsus$ extorts money from its victims by stealing sensitive material and keeping it for blackmailing and threatens to get the demands they need. cybersecurity Researchers found a gang that hacked Microsoft, Nvidia, and Ubisoft, have traced a 16-year-old boy from Oxford who is accused of being one of the leaders of lapsus$.

The same group later commented on the thread that it had not been targeting Ubisoft customer data.

A few days ago, 7 teens below the ages of 16 and 21 were arrested due to their suspected connection with hacking group lapsus$. Last month, lapsus$ accused it had leaked password hashes for employees of graphics chipmaker Nvidia and it also claimed responsibility for hacking Samsung’s systems. It claimed it leaked almost 190GB of data from Samsung.

Users of Ubisoft got this warning and security code messages without their acknowledgment and actions.

Password reset

As a precautionary measure, Ubisoft initiated a company-wide password reset. CMO of Ubisoft McBride said, “unfortunately, Ubisoft has had more than 80 data breaches as direct results of passwords. Adversaries use compromised passwords in the first phase of their attack and live off the land by harvesting additional passwords as they move laterally to new juicy targets within the network.”
